Completion of the 6 month follow up of the rabbit study of the GROSSO® implant

Recornea, in collaboration with Prof. Neil Lagali, Professor, Division of Ophthalmology, Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, Linköping University, Sweden conducted the six month follow-up of the rabbit study.

The GROSSO® implant can be safely implanted in the corneal stroma using a laser-assisted surgical technique. The folded implant unfolds quite easily and atraumatically in the corneal pocket.

The study involved implanting 12 white New Zealand white rabbits with the GROSSO® implant and 8 rabbits with only a femtosecond laser pocket created and a manual separation of the pocket without any implant inserted as controls. There was significant flattening in the corneas implanted with the GROSSO® implants at 1, 2, 3 and 6 months. This is shown by lower keratometry (K1, K2, Kave) values in the GROSSO® group compared to the control group and preoperative values. At 6 month follow up, the GROSSO® implants are generally well tolerated in the cornea and postoperative treatment schedule similar to other ocular implants would be sufficient to prevent neo-vascularization following intrastromal implantation of GROSSO® implant in humans.
