Glaucoma

Increased pressure in the eyeball
About Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide, currently affecting 80 M people total.

Trabeculectomy is the current gold standard in the glaucoma treatment performed on the eye that creates a new pathway for intraocular fluid inside the eye to be drained by natural percolation through a flap in the sclera underneath the upper eyelid.

However, this procedure has associated risks and complications such as failure of surgery to control the eye pressure due to an (1) inadequate or (2) excessive drainage of fluid from inside the eye as a consequence of (1) formation of fibrosis or scars that are occluding the flap in the sclera or (2) thinning of the residual sclera wall thickness which might consequently lead to bleeding inside of the eye.

Proven efficacy
Cost-effectiveness alternative

to traditional glaucoma surgeries, making them accessible to a wider patient population and healthcare systems.

Proven efficacy
Ease of implementation

to perform and integrate into clinical practice. This includes factors such as surgical technique, equipment requirements, and training for ophthalmic surgeons.

Public grants

GLAUCOMESH, a new filtering device for the treatment of glaucoma

Recornea received the grant “Linea A” from the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia in Italy, in collaboration with the Cluster for Life Sciences.

This grant supports the development of new ideas in the field of life sciences and unlocks the process of applying for follow up grants to support further product development. Recornea intends to develop a new filtering device for the treatment of glaucoma.
